Deferred Maintenance Is a Risk Decision
Postponed work transfers exposure; it does not remove cost

An ABM practice paper hosted by IFMA frames deferred maintenance as an enterprise risk affecting operations, finance, safety and resilience.[1] The source is a provider synthesis, not an independent population study, but its risk framing is valuable.
Analysis
A delayed task can alter failure probability, asset life, compliance, energy use and recovery time. The consequence depends on the asset, system and operating context.
Osmos Global analysis: every deferral should state the exposure retained, interim control, accountable authority and next review date. A work order moved to next year should not disappear from the risk conversation.
Leadership implication: finance and FM need one record of the decision. Savings claimed in the current period should be considered beside the risk and future cost transferred.
Decision lens
Recommended action. Require formal risk acceptance for every deferred item above a defined criticality threshold.
