Deferred Maintenance Is Enterprise Risk

Deferred maintenance is frequently presented as an engineering backlog. IFMA's 2025 knowledge publication frames it more broadly—as a business risk affecting operations, finance, safety and resilience.[12] That framing is strategically useful even where the public page does not provide a quantitative methodology.

Analysis

The accounting temptation is to count a delayed task as a saving. In reality, the organisation exchanges a known intervention for an uncertain liability: higher failure probability, shorter asset life, service disruption, safety exposure, energy waste or a more expensive emergency response. The effects can compound when ageing systems interact.

Osmos Global analysis: maintenance prioritisation should combine condition with consequence. A low-cost failure affecting a critical process can outrank a costly but redundant asset. The core register should show asset criticality, failure mode, condition confidence, statutory duty, operational consequence, interim control and latest safe intervention date.

Boards and CFOs need a translated view. Report backlog by risk tier, not only currency. Show changes in critical exposure, repeat failures, emergency-to-planned work, downtime and energy penalty. Distinguish incomplete records from healthy assets; missing condition data is uncertainty, not evidence of low risk.

The decision is not whether to eliminate every backlog. It is whether the organisation understands the risk it is carrying, has accepted it at the right level and has a funded path for the exposures that matter most.
